How To Fix Your Dead iPhone
Reading Time: 5 minutes This may happen to any iPhone user. You pressed the Power button but your iPhone did not respond. It looks dead meaning nothing shows up on the screen.
This article explains what to do if your iPhone will not turn on. Luckily, this issue can usually be easily fixed.
By dead, we mean that your device:
- shows no sign of power, or
- does not respond when you press the buttons or when you touch the screen, or
- does not seem to turn on, or
- has a black or blank screen, or
- Immediately turns off itself when you turn it on.
If your iPhone has any of the above problems, try the tips below to fix it. After each step, see whether it fixed your issue.

1-Charge your device
It is possible that your Phone’s battery is totally drained. Charge your device by plugging in your device. If this is the problem, your iPhone will turn on by itself when it does have enough battery power. If this does not solve your issue, see the next step.
When your phone is plugged in, you will see the charging screen which is an almost empty battery icon. You should only see the battery icon:
If you do not see this, or if you see the connect to power screen, which is an empty battery and cable screen, then try the tips below:
- It is possible that your device may not charge. When you want to charge your device, it is important to note that your cable or charger could be the culprit.
- Charge your device for a half hour
- Use the cable and charger that came with your iPhone. If this is not possible, make sure that your charging accessories are Apple certified.
- Check your cable and charger, is it damaged. If it is, do not use it.
- Is the charging port dirty? Check the charging port on the bottom of your device. Try to clean it if you see any debris.
- Inspect where your phone is plugged in. If you are charging your iPhone from a computer’s USB port, try plugging it directly into a wall outlet. If this does not work, try a different wall outlet.
2-Force Restart

You may need to force your device to restart.
Different iPhone models require different steps to force re-start. Here is how:
- iPhone 8 or later (e.g., iPhone X or 11): Press and release the volume up button and then press and release the volume down button and now press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
- iPhone 7 models: Press and hold the side and volume down buttons together until you see the Apple logo.
- Other iPhone models (iPhone 6 etc): Press and hold the side and home buttons together. Keep holding them until you see the Apple logo.
3-Recovery Mode
If you are still having this issue, the firmware may have been corrupted. You may need to restore and set your device up by using recovery mode. These steps will put your iPhone into Recovery Mode. And this will reinstall iOS without erasing your data. Here is how:
First back up your iPhone. You can backup your device by going to Settings > [your name], and iCloud.
- Connect your iPhone to your computer: Mac or PC.
- If your Mac is running macOS Catalina or later, open Finder. Any other systems (Windows or macOS Mojave or earlier), open iTunes. See: iTunes Not Recognizing Your iPhone or iPad? Fix
- Find and select your device in Finder (your iPhone will appear in the sidebar of the Finder windows) or in iTunes (your iPhone’s icon will appear in the upper-left corner of the iTunes window).
- Now depending on your iPhone, follow the steps below:
- iPhone 8 or later: Press and release the volume up button and then press and release the volume down button. and press and hold the side button until you see the Recovery Mode screen.
- iPhone 7 models: Press and hold the side and the volume down buttons together until you see the Recovery Mode screen.
- Other iPhone models: Press and hold the Home and the side buttons together until the Recovery Mode screen appears.
- You will see two options: Restore and Update. Click Update. And then follow the onscreen instructions.
Other notes
If you are able to turn on your device but you realize that your device freezes often, you may need to troubleshoot your device for freezing:
- Update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS software by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Update your apps by going to the App Store app.
- Check your iPhone’s storage. If it is full or almost full, free up space. There are various ways to do this. You can check the storage on your iPhone by going to Settings > Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Here you will see various recommendations that you may want to follow.
- Delete apps, photos or other content that you do not need
If you follow these steps, it is highly likely that you can easily fix your dead iPhone. If none of the tips above gets your iPhone work again, then it is time to take your iPhone in for service. You may want to contact Apple. You may also want to go to an Apple store for service.

Hello,my Cousins iPhone 11 is what we think “dead”. The Lock Screen works fine but when you open it up, no button works. Not the off button, not any apps, but, you can swipe over and you can turn the volume up/down. And we have no idea how it happened! Firstly my ipad keeps turning off with no apple logo but a loading screen, and then it turns on normally (still connected to wifi, bluetooth etc.) , minuteslater it does the same thing again and again why is this happening and what is the solution.
Tried force stopping and updating apps, don’t work.
I am suspecting a virus (although i checked antivirus no problem) or a cpu overload.
Waiting for a reply.
I may try to reboot after backing up…
