You may even have your device set to update automatically &#8211; you simply wake up in the morning, and your device lets you know it has been updated. But what do you do when your update isn&#8217;t going so well? In this article, we will give some troubleshooting tips for dealing with update issues. We will specifically address the issue where your iPad is stuck on &#8220;Preparing to Update.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Updating your iPad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The process of updating your iPad involves your device first downloading the necessary update files. After those files are on your iPad, the update can be installed. How to Fix<\/a>.<\/li><li>It is a good idea to connect your iPad to a power source to ensure it has sufficient charge to complete the update process. <\/li><li>Your iPad is compatible with the latest update. If you are trying to update to <a href=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/how-to-download-and-install-the-ios-14-update-troubleshoot-common-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iPadOS 14.x<\/a>, you need:<ul><li>iPad (5th gen) or later<\/li><li>iPad Pro<\/li><li>iPad mini 4 or iPad mini (5th gen)<\/li><li>iPad Air 2 or iPad Air (3rd gen) or later<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Steps for Updating<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Create a backup to make sure your important files are safe. You can back up to <a href=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/what-is-icloud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iCloud<\/a> or to your computer using iTunes or Finder.<\/li><li>Go to Settings &gt; General &gt; Software Update.<\/li><li>Tap Download and Install. Choose Install. Connect your iPad to power and give it plenty of time to make sure it is truly stuck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also want to check Apple&#8217;s update servers. If you can&#8217;t find your update file in the list and you cannot restart the update, try updating using your computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Go to Settings &gt; General &gt; iPad Storage.<\/li><li>Find the update file among the apps in the list. It should be listed with the settings icon <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"362\" height=\"354\" class=\"wp-image-13463\" style=\"width: 24px\" src=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/settings_icon.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/settings_icon.jpg 362w, https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/settings_icon-300x293.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 362px) 100vw, 362px\" \/> and be named something like: iPadOS 14.x. Tap on the update in the list.<\/li><li>Tap Delete Update.<\/li><li>Start the update process again.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Update Using your Computer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are having trouble updating your iPad, you can try completing the update using Finder or iTunes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Connect your iPad to your computer using the appropriate connector cable. If this is the first time you are connecting your iPad, you may need to click Trust on your computer, then on your iPad. You may need to follow onscreen instructions to set up Sync between your iPad and computer.<\/li><li>Click on Check for Update.
