This short article explains how you can troubleshoot&nbsp;If you\u2019re having problems using Spotlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is what you can do&nbsp;to get Mac Spotlight search working again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are having issues with <a href=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/spotlight-search-not-working-fix\/\">iOS Spotlight search, see this article<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before doing anything, simply restart your Mac. Restarting may fix your problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article offers two tips: One is to rebuild the Spotlight index. It my cases. I added&nbsp;Macintosh HD to the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7.<\/strong> A window will appear saying &#8220;Are you sure you want to prevent Spotlight from searching in &#8220;Macintosh HD&#8221;. &nbsp;Click &#8220;Ok&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/spotlight-add.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"523\" height=\"293\" src=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/spotlight-add.png\" alt=\"Spotlight privacy add\" class=\"wp-image-2587\" srcset=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/spotlight-add.png 523w, https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/spotlight-add-300x168.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 523px) 100vw, 523px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8. <\/strong>Now, click the &#8211; Remove button to remove Macintosh from the list<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This process will force Spotlight to re-index the contents of Macintosh HD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Terminal&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that the whole rebuilding process can also be done via the Terminal app. Here is how:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Open the Terminal app (Applications\/Utilities\/)<\/li><li>Enter the following command<\/li><li>sudo mdutil -E \/<\/li><li>This command will &#8220;Erase and rebuild index&#8221;<\/li><li>Press enter<\/li><li>You may have to enter your administrator password<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If rebuilding does not work, read on:&nbsp;Kill SystemUIServer.&nbsp;The SystemUIServer is a background process. It controls several aspects of macOS. The following process will make&nbsp;the SystemUIServer restart and that may fix your problem. Here is how:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Launch &#8220;Activity Monitor&#8221; (Applications\/Utilities\/)<\/li><li>Find &#8220;SystemUIServer&#8221; (you can use the search box)<a href=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/activity-monitor-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2590\" src=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/activity-monitor-1.png\" alt=\"Activity Monitor\" width=\"783\" height=\"272\" srcset=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/activity-monitor-1.png 783w, https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/activity-monitor-1-300x104.png 300w, https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/activity-monitor-1-768x267.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 783px) 100vw, 783px\" \/><\/a><\/li><li>Double click<\/li><li>And click Quit<\/li><li>Do not worry, macOS will restart the process again, automatically within seconds.<\/li><li>Check to see if Spotlight is working now.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are not happy about the Spotlight search results, go to&nbsp;Apple menu &gt; System Preferences, click Spotlight, then click the Search Results tab.
