A lot of macOS and iOS users use Pages on a daily basis. However, occasionally, Pages may refuse to open your files. You may see an error message something like this:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;macreports.pages&#8221; can&#8217;t be opened right now. Pages couldn\u2019t read the file.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pages-cannot-open-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4845 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pages-cannot-open-1.png\" alt=\"Pages could not open a file\" width=\"855\" height=\"284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pages-cannot-open-1.png 855w, https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pages-cannot-open-1-300x100.png 300w, https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pages-cannot-open-1-768x255.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 855px) 100vw, 855px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nDocuments may fail to open due to a lot of different reasons. For example, this could be a file permission issue, or the file you are trying to open might be corrupted.<\/p>\n<p>Please try each step below. Make sure to check your Pages document after each step to see if it is opening.<\/p>\n<h2>Pages cannot open document<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1<\/strong>. Quit the Pages app and then try to reopen it.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On iPhone or iPad, just close it out of the multitasking tray. Then try to reopen the document.<\/li>\n<li>On Mac, click Pages and Quit Pages (or press\u00a0Command + Q while it is open). Now try to reopen the document.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2<\/strong>. Restart your Device.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3<\/strong>. If this is an iCloud document, you may be having a sync problem. Forcing Pages to re-sync a document from iCloud may fix your problem. \u00a0Here is how:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Again completely quit Pages on your device.<\/li>\n<li>Now on a device, preferably a computer, go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icloud.com\">icloud.com<\/a>\u00a0and sign in. (<a href=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/sign-icloud-com-ipad-iphone\/\">You can use your iOS device also<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Click Pages.<\/li>\n<li>Find the document that you could not open. <a href=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pages-icloud.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4848\" src=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pages-icloud.png\" alt=\"Pages iCloud\" width=\"1276\" height=\"618\" srcset=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pages-icloud.png 1276w, https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pages-icloud-300x145.png 300w, https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pages-icloud-1024x496.png 1024w, https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/pages-icloud-768x372.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1276px) 100vw, 1276px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Make a small change.<\/li>\n<li>This will force iCloud to sync your changes.<\/li>\n<li>And close it.<\/li>\n<li>Now try to open the document on the device that you could not open previously.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4<\/strong>. Follow the steps below, if you are having this problem on your Mac. Following these steps will fix disk permissions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On your Mac, open the Disk Utility app (Applications &gt; Utilities), or you can use <a href=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/how-to-use-spotlight-on-your-mac\/\">Spotlight<\/a> to open it.<\/li>\n<li>Select the primary hard disk.<\/li>\n<li>Click the First Aid button.<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;Run&#8221; and &#8220;Continue&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Now restart your Mac and then try to open the Pages file.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>5<\/strong>. Clearing the cache files may fix your problem. Here is how:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Quit Pages.<\/li>\n<li>On your Mac, go to Finder.<\/li>\n<li>Click Go and Go to Folder (or press the Shift, Command, G keys together).<\/li>\n<li>Enter the following and click Go.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<pre>~\/Library\/Caches<\/pre>\n<ul>\n<li>Find, if there is, this item named:<strong> com.apple.Iwork.pages<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Move this file to the Trash.<\/li>\n<li>Close this window now.<\/li>\n<li>Now press and hold the Shift key when opening Pages and double click the file you want to open.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>6<\/strong>. Start your Mac in <a href=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/how-to-start-your-mac-in-safe-mode\/\">Safe Mode<\/a> to see if the problem persists.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Turn off your Mac.<\/li>\n<li>Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold the Shift key.<\/li>\n<li>Keep holding the Shift key until you see the login screen and then release the Shift key.<\/li>\n<li>Log in (you may have to log in a few times).<\/li>\n<li>Your computer is now in Safe Mode.<\/li>\n<li>Try to open your file in Safe Mode.<\/li>\n<li>Whatever the result, now restart your Mac normally without pressing the Shift key.<\/li>\n<li>Now again open Pages to see if your problem occurs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See also: <a href=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/easiest-way-to-open-a-pages-file\/\">Easiest Way To Open \/ Edit a .Pages File On a Windows PC<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This article explains what you can do when a Pages document won&#8217;t open.
