When the battery symbol has an X on it, you may not be able to use your MacBook at all unless it is connected to power. You may also see a notification saying <strong>No Batteries Available<\/strong>. To the point where the battery is essentially useless. There are a couple of possibilities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Your MacBook may need a new battery.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The battery connection might have come loose inside your MacBook.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is unlikely, but in the past, there were reports of this problem being fixed by resetting the SMC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-can-you-do-when-you-see-the-x-on-the-battery\">What can you do when you see the X on the battery?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to fix this problem, you will probably need to get your MacBook looked at. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>If your MacBook is still under warranty or you have AppleCare+, then you will definitely want to <a href=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/how-to-contact-apple-online-live-chat-support-team\/\">contact Apple<\/a>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have a 15-inch MacBook Pro (2015-2017), you should check if it is <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/15-inch-macbook-pro-battery-recall\">eligible for the battery recall program<\/a>. There are also other <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/keyboard-service-program-for-mac-notebooks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MacBooks eligible for a keyboard replacement<\/a>, where you may get a new battery along with the new keyboard for no charge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are handy with these sorts of things, you may be able to order and install a new battery yourself. Otherwise, you will need to take it in for repair. You can make an <a href=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/how-to-make-a-genius-bar-reservation\/\">appointment at a Genius Bar<\/a> or with an Apple Certified repair center such as Best Buy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you do that, though, you can try resetting the SMC and taking a look at the Apple Diagnostics report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reset-the-smc\">Reset the SMC<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First, you need to know what type of Mac you have \u2013 whether it is Apple silicon or an Intel Mac. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go to the <strong>Apple \uf8ff menu<\/strong> and click on <strong>About This Mac<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/about-this-mac.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/about-this-mac.png\" alt=\"about this Mac information on MacBook \" class=\"wp-image-50185\" style=\"width:506px;height:843px\" width=\"506\" height=\"843\" srcset=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/about-this-mac.png 784w, https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/about-this-mac-240x400.png 240w, https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/about-this-mac-615x1024.png 615w, https:\/\/macreports.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/about-this-mac-768x1279.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 506px) 100vw, 506px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>If you have a <strong>Processor<\/strong> listed (that says Intel), you have an Intel Mac.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you see <strong>Chip<\/strong> listed, you have Apple silicon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, if you have an Intel MacBook, from the information in the About This Mac window, make a note of your exact model, such as MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-have-apple-silicon\">If you have Apple silicon<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Just restart your MacBook to reset the SMC. You can go to <strong>Apple \uf8ff menu<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Restart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-if-you-have-an-intel-macbook\">If you have an Intel MacBook<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You will need to know if you have a T2 Security Chip. You can check the list of <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT208862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mac models that have the T2 chip<\/a>. Once you have that figured out, you can check out <a href=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/how-to-reset-smc-system-management-controller-on-your-mac\/\">How to Reset SMC<\/a> for details on how to do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-run-apple-diagnostics\">Run Apple Diagnostics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If resetting the SMC didn&#8217;t help, you can try running Apple Diagnostics. This won&#8217;t actually fix the issue, but it can provide you with more information and suggestions. Apple Diagnostics helps identify hardware issues on your Mac. There are a few steps involved in running the diagnostics, so check out <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT202731\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-it-works-while-connected-to-power-so-do-i-really-need-to-get-it-fixed\">It works while connected to power, so do I really need to get it fixed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, the reason for the X is that the battery has degraded. If your MacBook is more than a few years old, this is the most likely scenario. Once the <a href=\"https:\/\/macreports.com\/bottom-of-macbook-separating-or-bulging-is-it-a-swollen-battery-is-it-safe-to-use\/\">battery has started to degrade, it can swell<\/a>, and there are dangers associated with a swollen, degraded battery.
