How to Translate Webpages in Safari on Mac
Safari has become an indispensable browser for Mac users, offering a sleek design and seamless integration with the Apple ecosystem. Among its many features, Safari’s ability to translate entire webpages stands out as a valuable tool for navigating content in foreign languages. For example, I sometimes come across webpages written in languages I don’t understand, but I really need to know what they’re saying. In these moments, translating the page into English or Turkish is essential for me.
This article focuses on translating the entire webpage without losing its design elements. The website will look the same, but the words will be displayed in the translated language. I’m making this distinction because, on a Mac, you can also translate specific text by selecting it, control-clicking, and choosing the translate option. This method works for translating content in various contexts, including documents, emails, messages, photos, images, and webpages. However, translating an entire page provides a seamless browsing experience.
Here’s how to translate webpages in Safari on your Mac:
- Open Safari
- Navigate to the Webpage
Go to the webpage you want to translate. We will translate macreports.com. - Look for the Translate Button
If the webpage can be translated, the Smart Search field will display the Translate button. This button looks like two speech bubbles: one with the letter “A” and the other with a human figure, as shown below:
- Click the Translate Button and Choose a Language
A menu will appear with available translation options. Select the language you want to translate the webpage into. If you want to see other languages here, see the “add more languages” section below.
Safari will now translate the webpage into the chosen language while preserving its original design and layout. The translated text seamlessly replaces the original content, making it easy to read and understand without disrupting the webpage’s appearance.
What If the Translate Button Does Not Appear?
If the website does not show the Translate button, this indicates that the webpage cannot be translated. This may happen if the page’s content is in a language Safari does not support for translation or if the text is part of an image or a custom design element that cannot be translated. For example, if a website fully consists of now-dead Flash elements, the translation won’t work.
How to Add More Languages to the Translate Menu
You can make more languages available in the Translate menu by adding them in your Language & Region settings. After you add a language to your list of preferred languages, if a translation is available for that language, it will appear in the Translate menu in Safari.
To add a language:
- Open System Settings on your Mac.
- Navigate to General > Language & Region.
- Click the + button to add a new language to your list of preferred languages.
Once added, Safari will include this language as a translation option when it is available.
This feature is especially helpful when researching, shopping on international websites, or exploring foreign-language content. With just a few clicks, you can make any unfamiliar webpage accessible and easy to navigate.
