Waymo Now Has More Autonomous Cars Than Apple

Last updated on June 12, 2018 By Serhat Kurt Leave a Comment

We previously reported (here and here) that Apple had the second biggest autonomous vehicle fleet, after GM Cruise in California. Apple continues steadily to expand its self-driving car fleet in California since it was granted a permit from the California DMV in April 2017. Two weeks ago, we reported that Apple had increased its number of cars to 62.

It seems that Waymo also keeps expanding its selection of self-driving cars in California, according to the California DMV. Waymo now has 63 approved self-driving vehicles. Apple is still at 62, and GM Cruise has 104 approved cars.

We also learned that Waymo has been meeting with the DMV many more times than the other big manufacturers. According to the DMV records, since 2015, they, DMV officials, have met with GM Cruise approximately five times, with Waymo or Google approximately twenty-two times, and with Tesla Motors approximately nine times.  Apple has met with the DMV four times.

Here is the latest list of the top companies by fleet size:

In California, currently, there are 55 Autonomous Vehicle Testing Permit holders, 440 approved vehicles and 1700 approved drivers.
