How to Rename a USB Drive in macOS
I recently got a USB flash drive to transfer files between my Mac and an old Windows machine. When I plugged the drive into my Mac, the name that appeared in the Finder sidebar was “NO NAME.” Although a generic name may not be a big deal in the short term if you only have one “NO NAME” USB drive, it is a good idea to name your files, folders and external drives something descriptive. Fortunately, it is very easy to name or rename these drives in Finder.
How to name a USB flash drive on Mac
- Attach the USB drive to a port on your Mac.
- Open a Finder window. You should see your drive in the left sidebar. If you don’t see it, go to Finder > Settings and click on the Sidebar tab at the top. Check the box next to External disks.
- Right-click (Control-click) on the name of the USB drive to open a menu.
- Choose Rename “NO NAME” and type a new name for your drive. You should know that there is a limit to how many characters you can use. Hit Enter to save the new name.
