How to Turn Down or Change WhatsApp Message Sound on iPhone

I recently found that my WhatsApp message notifications were too loud on my iPhone. The sound was getting pretty irritating, especially when someone would send me multiple messages in a row. When I looked into what can be done to lower the volume of WhatsApp text notifications, I found a few settings that affect the sound of the notifications; however, there is no way to simply lower only the volume of the WhatsApp notifications. In this article, I will explain what you can do to change the sound and volume of WhatsApp notifications.

Changing the notification volume

Unfortunately, iOS only lets you adjust one volume for both ringtones and notifications. To adjust this volume:

1. Open Settings on your iPhone and tap on Sounds & Haptics.
2. There are two ways you can control the volume of the ringtone and alerts:
   • Change the position on the volume slider; drag left or right for quieter or louder tones.
   • Enable or disable “Change with Buttons.” If you want to be able to turn down your ringtone and notification volume, enable “Change with Buttons” so that the volume buttons on the side of your phone will also adjust the volume of your WhatsApp notifications.

Changing the notification sound

You can change the sound you hear when you receive a WhatsApp message. This may help if you find the current sound annoying.

1. Open WhatsApp on your iPhone, and from the main page, tap on the Settings tab at the bottom of the screen. To get to the main page while in a conversation, tap on the back arrow in the upper-left corner of the screen.
2. Tap on Notifications.
3. There are separate settings for regular and group notifications. To change the sound for individual message notifications, tap Sound under Message Notifications. Choose an option, then tap Save. Do the same for group messages. You can also choose None.

Turning off the notification sounds

You can turn off WhatsApp notification sounds completely from iPhone Settings, turn off the in-app sounds from WhatsApp or set the notification sounds to “None.”

To turn off all WhatsApp message sounds:

1. Open Settings on your iPhone and tap on Notifications.
2. Scroll down and tap on WhatsApp.
3. Toggle the switch off next to Sounds to turn off all WhatsApp notification sounds.

To turn off notification sounds when you have WhatsApp open (in-app notifications):

1. Open WhatsApp and tap on the Settings tab at the bottom.
2. Tap on In-app notifications, then toggle the switch next to Sounds to turn them off.

You can also set the message notification sound to None from WhatsApp > Settings > Notifications > Sound.
