How to Find the Location and Coordinates of a Photo or Video on iPhone
Have you ever looked at a photo or video and wondered exactly where it was taken? Whether you’re reminiscing about a memorable trip, planning to revisit a favorite spot, or sharing precise directions with a friend, knowing the exact location of your photos and videos can be incredibly useful.
For example, I recently came across a photo I took during a road trip, and while I could see the general area on the small map in the Photos app, I needed the exact coordinates to plan a return visit. This is especially helpful if the location is in a rural or remote area, where landmarks might not be easily recognizable, and specific coordinates can make all the difference.
When you swipe up on a photo or video in the Photos app, you can view various technical details, including a small map showing where it was captured. However, the Photos app doesn’t let you copy and paste this location directly into the Maps app for more detailed navigation.
In this article, I’ll show you how to overcome this limitation, find the precise location of your photos and videos in the Maps app, and even view their coordinates, including latitude and longitude. Whether for organizing memories, sharing a destination, or planning an adventure, these steps will come in handy.
Steps to Find the Exact Location of a Photo or Video
- Open the Photo or the Video
Start by opening the photo or video you want to investigate on your iPhone in the Photos app. Make sure the photo is enlarged (tap on it if not) so you can clearly view the details. - Swipe Up for Details
Swipe up on the photo (or video) to reveal its detailed information. You’ll see a small map at the bottom with the location name displayed as a blue link below it. - View the Location in Maps
You will see a small map, as I said above. Tap the blue location link beneath the map. This will open the Maps app and display the precise location where the photo was taken. The location will be marked on the map, with the location info automatically opened.
- Access and Use the Location Information
In the Maps app, you can do the following:- View the Coordinates: The coordinates (latitude and longitude) of the location will be displayed in the info card. You can copy these if needed.
- Get Directions: Open a route to this place for navigation.
- Save the Location: Use the “…” menu to save the place as a favorite or add it to a guide for future reference, as you can see in the screenhsot below.
- Drop a Pin: If you want to create a new marker at the location, drop a pin.
- Zoom and Explore: Zoom in to see the precise spot where the photo was taken, and change the map type (standard, satellite, or hybrid) for better context.
- Save or Share the Coordinates
Once you’ve located the spot, you can save it for future use or share the coordinates with others. This is especially handy if you’re planning a return visit or need to provide detailed directions to someone else. If you tap and hold on the coordinates, you can copy them and then you can paste them anywhere you would like.
Now that you know how to view the precise location of your photos and videos, you’ll have a powerful tool at your disposal for managing and making the most of your memories.
