How to Stop the ‘Turn On Reactions’ Popup in FaceTime, Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams
If you’re tired of seeing the “Turn on Reactions” popup every time you open Zoom, Google Meet, or FaceTime, Microsoft Teams, you’re not alone. The message typically reads:
“Turn on Reactions: Google Chrome has turned off Reaction Effect. Click on the camera icon and select Reactions to add more impact to your gestures.”
Here is the screen shot of this popup:
For many users—myself included—this feature is unnecessary and disruptive. Even after enabling Reactions, the popup continues to appear every time the camera is activated.
Why Does This Happen?
- The ‘Turn on Reactions’ popup appears repeatedly whenever the camera turns on.
- Even when Reactions are enabled, the prompt still shows up.
- The issue primarily affects video apps like Microsoft Teams, FaceTime or Google Meet
- macOS settings may be overriding app preferences, causing persistent notifications.
Solution 1: Toggle Reactions On and Off, Then Restart
A simple trick that has worked for some users is toggling Reactions on and off before restarting their computer. Here’s how:
- When the ‘Turn on Reactions’ popup appears, turn Reactions on.
- Immediately turn Reactions off.
- Restart your computer—this is the key step.
After doing this, the popup stopped appearing for me, and I was still able to receive FaceTime notifications and other alerts normally.
Solution 2: Disable FaceTime Notifications and Restart (For FaceTime Users)
If you’re experiencing this issue while using FaceTime, turning off FaceTime notifications may help. Follow these steps:
- Go to > System Settings > Notifications > FaceTime.
- Toggle “Allow Notifications” off.
- Restart your computer—this is crucial.
If your FaceTime notifications are already off, try this alternative approach:
- Turn FaceTime notifications on temporarily.
- Change the notification style to “None”.
- Turn FaceTime notifications off again.
- Restart your computer.
This method only works after restarting, so be sure to complete that step.
Solution 3: Disable macOS Reactions (For Zoom Users on Mac)
If you’re using Zoom on Mac and recently updated your macOS, you may have noticed that AI-generated animated reactions appear whenever you use gestures like a thumbs-up or raise your hands. These animations can be distracting, especially during important meetings.
Many users look for this setting within Zoom, but this is actually a macOS feature, not a Zoom setting. To disable it:
- Join a Zoom meeting and make sure your camera is on.
- Locate the green camera icon in the top menu bar.
- Click on “Reactions” and turn them off.
Once disabled, these automatic gesture reactions should no longer appear. This fix also works for other video conferencing apps affected by macOS’s reaction feature.
