What to Do If You Get an AirTag Battery Low Notification
I recently got a “AirTag Battery is Low” notification for each of my dogs’ AirTags. Of course, the obvious thing to do is change the battery. But, if you’ve gotten one of these notifications, you may wonder if you need to do that right away or if the AirTag can go a little longer without a new battery. In other words, what does low mean? Also, if you have never changed your AirTag’s battery, you may be wondering how to do it and what type of battery to buy. In this article, I’ll answer these questions and provide instructions on how to change an AirTag battery.
How much battery life is left when you get the “low battery” notification?
For items like AirTags, you won’t be able to see the exact battery percentage left. The only indication you have about the charge level is the notification. Even if you open up FindMy and look at the available information about that AirTag, all you will be able to see is that it is low. Next to the AirTag name, you will see a battery indicator icon with only a small red part indicating low charge. This does not represent the actual battery level.
Although there are battery testers you could buy to find out the actual remaining charge, this is surely not worth it to most people. So, basically, if you see the low battery notification for your AirTag, you should change the battery soon to make sure it doesn’t stop working.
What type of battery should you buy?
AirTags use a common CR2032 button battery. You should be able to find these easily. The only thing you might watch out for is a bitterant coating. Some batteries sold these days have a bitter coating added to the outside so that children won’t try to eat them. Apple states that some such batteries may not work with AirTags; however, brands such as Duracell now state on the packaging that the batteries are “Compatible with Apple AirTag.”
How to change the AirTag battery
- The AirTag case consists of two parts that screw together. With the white side down and silver side up, unscrew the two parts by turning the silver side counterclockwise.
- Remove the old battery and place the new battery inside, making sure the new battery has the positive (+) side up. Your AirTag should make a noise.
- Put the silver part of the case back on the AirTag by lining up the three tabs on the silver side with the slots on the white side. Gently turn clockwise until secure.
