How Many CPU Cores Does Your Mac Have? Find Out
More CPU cores means more power. Your Mac’s CPU has multiple cores and determining your core count is easy. Each of these cores are capable of handling its own set of instructions simultaneously, leading to improved overall performance and efficiency.
In this article, I will show you how to determine the CPU core count on your Mac. I will show you two different ways, one using System Information and the other using Terminal.
Method # 1: Use System Information to find CPU cores
- Open System Information on your Mac. There are multiple ways to open this. Choose one of the following methods:
- Use Spotlight. Press Command and Spacebar together and then type System Information.
- Press and hold the Option key and open the Apple Menu by clicking the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the screen. Select System Information.
- Open System Settings and go to General > About. Scroll down and click the System Report button.
- From the left Sidebar, open the Hardware option, and you will see the total number of cores. As you can see in the screenshot below, my Mac has 8 (4 performance and 4 efficiency).
Method # 2: Use Terminal to find the number of CPU cores
- Open Terminal on your Mac. Again, you can use Spotlight or go to the Applications > Utilities folder.
- Enter the following command code and hit enter:
system_profiler SPHardwareDataType | grep "Cores"
Terminal will say something like this: Total Number of Cores: 8 (4 performance and 4 efficiency), as you can see below.
