How to Convert HEIC Images to JPEG or PNG with Quick Actions on Mac
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Format. It is a file format that Apple uses to store images on its devices. For example, you will notice that HEIC is the default image format for photos taken with iPhone and iPad cameras. Apple uses HEIC because it offers advantages like better compression and higher image quality, compared to JPEG, which can lead to smaller file sizes while keeping comparable image quality.
One of the disadvantages of using HEIC is that it is not widely accepted like JPEG or PNG; thus, its compatibility is low. While Apple devices support HEIC, other systems may not support it, so if you want to share an HEIC photo, you may want to convert it to JPEG or PNG.
There are a variety of ways to convert HEIC images to JPEG or PNG. We have previously written about some of these methods in detail. Please see the Related articles section below at the end of this article.
In this article, I will share a practical and easy way to convert HEIC images on a Mac. We will use the Quick Actions tool.
Convert HEICs to JPEGs or PNGs
- Find the HEIC image you want to convert. I am going to convert the following file in the screenshot, macreports.heic.
- Right-click the image (or use the two-finger click) to open the shortcuts menu. From there, select Quick Actions and then Convert Image, as you can see in the screenshot below.
- The Convert Image window will open. From the Format drop-down menu, select JPEG or PNG and then click the Convert to PNG or Convert to JPEG button. Before converting, you will also be shown the image size. You will be given the option to preserve the image metadata. Image metadata is embedded information, invisible to you, within an image file that provides details about the image itself, like the GPS coordinates or hardware details used to take the image.
As soon as you click the Convert button, a PNG or JPEG version of the HEIC file will instantly be created and saved in the same folder as the original HEIC file.
