How to Block a Channel in Apple News
One of the nice things about using a news reader is the ability to customize it. In the Apple News app, you can choose to follow certain topics or channels, and if you don’t like a particular channel, you can block it. Also, if you like or dislike a specific story, you can tell Apple news to show more or less stories like it.
There are many reasons someone may want to block a particular channel in Apple News. A few common reasons are:
- Apple is showing you too many stories from a channel you don’t really care about.
- You get distracted by a particular channel and want to be more focused as you browse the news.
- You really dislike a channel, such as a news outlet with a strong political bias.
How to block a channel
The instructions for blocking a channel are almost the same on Mac, iPhone and iPad.
- Open Apple News and find a story from the channel you would like to block.
- Tap or click on the three dots below the story, on the right.
- Tap on or hover your pointer over the name of the channel, then select Block Channel.
How to unblock a channel
On Mac
- With Apple News open, go to the top menu bar and click on File, then select Manage Blocked Channels & Topics.
- Click the minus sign next to the channel you would like to unblock, then click on Unblock.
On iPhone
- In the Apple News app, tap on the Following tab at the bottom of your screen.
- Scroll down to the Manage section. If necessary, tap on the carat next to Manage to open the section.

- Tap on the minus sign next to the channel you would like to unblock, then tap on Unblock.
On iPad

How to show more stories you like (or less you don’t like)
If you don’t want to completely block a particular channel, but there is a topic or type of story (that maybe spans multiple channels) that you don’t want to see, Apple News gives you a way to indicate that preference. You can give a thumbs up to stories you like and a thumbs down to stories you don’t.
- In Apple News, find a story you don’t want to see.
- Tap or click on the three dots below the story, on the right.
- Select Suggest More or Suggest Less.
- You will see a thumbs up or down appear at the bottom of the story.
Still seeing stories from a blocked channel?
If you look in Manage Blocked Channels & Topics (see above), you can see that Apple states that although blocked channels and topics are hidden, stories from blocked channels may still show up in your Apple News if they have been specially selected by the editors.
