How To Turn Off iMessage On Your Mac

Last updated on March 19, 2020 By Serhat Kurt Leave a Comment

This article explains how you can turn off messages on your Mac. It seems that a lot of users want to disable the Messages app because they find it distracting.

You can use the Messages app with your Mac to send and receive iMessages, and you can also send or receive  SMS and MMS messages via your iPhone. Turning iMessage off will stop messages appearing on your Mac. However, this process will not affect your iPhone meaning you can still send or receive messages on your iPhone.

Turning off iMessage

This is very simple to do. Simply follow the steps below:

  1. On your Mac, open the Messages app. You can open it from your desktop, dock, or Applications folder. Or you can use Spotlight.
  2. In Messages, click Messages and Preferences (in the menu bar).Messages Preferences
  3. Click the iMessage tab.
  4. And uncheck the box next to “Enable this account.”Turn off Messages
  5. You can also choose to sign out if wanted. But without signing out too, you will not get or send messages.

You did not delete the Messages app. If you want to be able to send or receive messages again, simply check the “enable this account” box.
